FIFA in Crisis: Money Trumps Governance

Football is in a standoff. Gianni Infantino’s proposal to sell World Cup commercial rights for $4.2 billion has split the sport down the middle. Norway and several European nations have withdrawn support. CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are divided. Only Africa and some others back him.

This is not about football anymore. It is about who controls it. Infantino argues the money will grow the game. Critics argue it will sell its soul. The Norwegian FA president put it bluntly: there is no institutional trust left. And she is right.

FIFA’s history is riddled with corruption scandals. To now push a mega-deal without broad consultation shows the same top-down approach that got FIFA into trouble a decade ago. The fact that some confederations are backing Infantino only after securing deals for themselves proves the point: loyalty is being bought.

Football is the world’s game. It cannot be run like a private company. The World Cup belongs to fans, to players, to 211 member nations - not to the highest bidder. The solution is not to oust Infantino unilaterally. It is to reform. Create transparent bidding. Ensure revenue is distributed equitably. And most importantly, separate commercial decisions from political ones.

If FIFA fails this test, it risks losing credibility just as football’s popularity peaks. The beautiful game deserves better than boardroom wars.
