From Screen Time to Real Life

When social media emerged at the dawn of the 21st century, it was hailed as a magnificent digital bridge connecting the world. Various online platforms erased geographical distances and brought people closer together. However, within just two decades, a darker side of this boon has come to light. Technology is no longer merely a medium of communication; it has become a primary source of distraction, stress born of comparison, and 'smartphone addiction,' profoundly affecting our social and cultural sensibilities.

According to mental health experts, prolonged screen time disrupts the brain's chemical balance in a manner similar to substance addiction. The craving for 'likes' and 'comments' has created a virtual facade where everyone showcases only the most glamorous aspects of their lives. Consequently, serious mental health issues—such as the 'fear of missing out' (FOMO), low self-esteem, depression, and loneliness—have surged among the general public, particularly the youth.

From a social perspective, digital platforms have weakened our real-world, physical relationships. Family members sitting at the same table often remain engrossed in their screens rather than conversing with one another. Cultural festivals, family gatherings, and public events have transformed from intimate, shared experiences into mere opportunities for taking photos and creating short videos. Furthermore, social media platforms—driven by complex algorithms—have significantly fueled societal polarization and the spread of fake news, thereby undermining social harmony.

Recognizing the gravity of this digital quagmire, a new and positive movement is taking shape in society: the movement for 'tech-freedom' or 'digital detox.' People are now voluntarily distancing themselves from their smartphones, increasingly using basic phones without internet access, and taking up 'tech-free challenges' on weekends. 'Screen-free' zones are being created in cafes, resorts, and yoga centers, allowing people to spend time with nature and their loved ones without digital distractions.

This movement to unplug is not an anti-technology stance; rather, it is an effort to return to the mindful use of technology. We must understand that technology was created to serve humanity, not to enslave humans to it. Real-world relationships, the solace found in reading books, walks amidst nature, and face-to-face conversations form the foundation of our humanity. Disconnecting from technology is a vital journey toward reclaiming this lost human sensibility.
