UNDP and Hindustan Unilever have extended a 7-year partnership to empower *Safai Mitras* (sanitation workers) and promote plastic recycling across 50 Indian cities. Taking a historic step towards addressing the escalating plastic waste crisis and fostering environmental conservation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) have expanded their partnership. Under this seven-year strategic agreement, the plastic recycling infrastructure will be strengthened across 50 major cities. This partnership aims not only to free cities from plastic waste but also to act as a catalyst in realizing the concept of a 'circular economy' at the grassroots level.
At the heart of this entire project are our *Safai Mitras*—the waste pickers and sanitation workers. Through this expanded program, thousands of *Safai Mitras* working across these 50 cities will gain formal recognition, skill training, and opportunities for better livelihoods. They will be provided with a robust social security net by being equipped with essential safety gear, health insurance, and access to government welfare schemes. A key humanitarian aspect of this initiative is to secure a dignified place in society for these unsung heroes—the waste pickers—who often live on the margins.
To modernize the plastic recycling infrastructure, state-of-the-art 'Material Recovery Facilities' (MRFs) and digital tracking systems will be established under this partnership. This will streamline the process of segregating dry waste and plastic at the source and transporting them safely to recycling plants. Digital infrastructure will enable the tracking of individual pieces of plastic waste, ensuring that the waste is reused or recycled rather than being dumped in landfills or rivers.
Implemented in collaboration with local administrations and municipal corporations, this campaign holds the potential to transform the model of urban sanitation management. This unique Public-Private-Community Partnership will establish a sustainable framework for solid waste management in cities. Alongside this, extensive public awareness campaigns will be conducted to sensitize local communities and citizens about responsible plastic usage and waste segregation.
